I have always wondered this. I went to spencers gifts today, and saw all the vibrators, I noticed they were much thinner than my penis. Are they supposed to be like this?
Although they may look phallic and most are capable for internal usage, many times women and men both prefer to use vibrators externally- men on the penis, nipples, and perhaps around the anus, women on the clitoris, labia, and the nipples and anus as well. A majority of women climax by clitoral stimulation, rather than by vaginal penetration, so what most are looking for in a vibrator is strong vibration for exterior usage. Even for the women who can orgasm from penetration, it is from G-spot stimulation, and area the size of a quarter or smaller- which is quite thin. Therefore, most thin vibrators are quite adequate for the job.
Another fact might be that it is difficult to design a very thick vibrator with substantial girth that will work correctly. Vibrators can work two ways- either with vibrating bullets inserted into various points, or with actual motors, but either way, it has to be powerful enough to send the vibrations through the layers of material, be it hard plastic, silicone, or soft jelly. The more girth, the more power required for the same amount of vibration, and it can be hard to design something that does that on simply batteries alone (rather than being plugged-in) or without having a roaring motor that sounds like a lawn-mower.

I would not take Spencer is selection to be representative of all the sex toys out there- they are not exactly a seller of quality erotic materials. They are probably stocking the thin hard plastic twist-on vibrators that are cheap (about $20) and do fine enough for what they are, but wo not carry more expensive brands that offer a better selection.

A waterproof one will have a rubber o-ring seal around the battery cap, and/or any place where there is a seam.
Only those with the seal can be used (submerged) in the tub... if that is what you are wondering.
